NARCISSIST'S
PLAYBOOK

Empathy Not Included

A team of independent filmmakers spent years documenting how narcissists manipulate their victims. Then one of their own subjects turned the tables on them mid-production, and is still, to this day, running a significant smear campaign against the filmmakers and whistleblowers.

Narcissist's Playbook is a feature documentary that lets narcissists explain their own tactics on camera, alongside survivors and leading experts on coercive control. Then, in its final act, the filmmakers become part of the story they're telling, a twist the team is still living through in real time.

Behind The Film

The Story Behind the Story

Director Mark Vicente and producer Scott Altomare built their reputation together on What the Bleep Do We Know?!, a grassroots independent documentary shunned by every major distributor and every major festival it submitted to, Sundance, Berlin, Toronto, and Cannes among them. Self-distributed from a single theater, it grew by word of mouth into one of the highest-grossing documentaries ever released in the United States, eventually picked up by a major distributor after proving, on its own, that an audience existed.

Years later, Vicente became a central whistleblower in the NXIVM cult case, chronicled in HBO's The Vow. The organization's leader, Keith Raniere, was convicted on all seven counts against him, including racketeering, sex trafficking, and forced labor conspiracy, with a jury needing less than five hours to reach its verdict. He was sentenced to 120 years in prison.

Vicente didn't set out to make another exposé. He lived through coercive control himself before turning the camera on how it works, this time alongside a producing partner who already knows what it takes to build a grassroots phenomenon out of nothing.

This isn't personal for Vicente alone. Every principal on the production team has lived through narcissistic abuse in some form. That shared history is part of why the film handles the subject with the precision it does: this is a team that knows exactly what it's depicting, because they've each lived it.

Good storytelling doesn't tell you what to think. It helps you see what was already there. The Narcissist's Playbook does exactly that.

This film is so f**king important! Once you understand the pattern, it all makes sense. See this film as soon as humanly possible!

Who's In It

Featured Voices

Evan Rachel Wood (Westworld, Thirteen) and director Barry Sonnenfeld (Men in Black, The Addams Family) both appear in the film.

Self-aware, diagnosed narcissists including Prof. Sam Vaknin, HG Tudor, Lee Hammock, and Sara Crouson speak openly about their own tactics: grooming, gaslighting, coercive control.

No Studio. No Streamer. No Gatekeeper.

The film was built and grown entirely outside the traditional development and distribution system, the same way Vicente and Altomare built What the Bleep two decades earlier. No studio greenlight. No streamer marketing budget. No gatekeeper.

In four months, the film's social channels generated 51 million views and 1 million engagements, growing the audience from roughly 4,000 followers to 259,000, without a distributor or a marketing budget behind it.

The marketing, advertising, and outreach behind that growth is entirely survivor-funded. The same people the film is speaking to are the ones paying to put it in front of others.

Why This Matters Right Now

Coercive control and narcissistic abuse have moved from therapy-speak into mainstream conversation over the last several years. Most coverage still relies on survivors describing what happened to them after the fact.

This film arrives with something most coverage doesn't have: the narcissists themselves, explaining their tactics on camera, in their own words, cross-referenced against survivor testimony and expert analysis.

The filmmakers have taken a bet on themselves that the studios and streamers who believe there's no audience for this film are dead wrong. There are millions and millions of people in support groups online right now, trying to recover from exactly what this film documents. The audience exists, and the filmmakers aim to prove it.

Zoom out from personal relationships and the same patterns are visible in who currently leads countries and corporations. Once audiences understand how these individuals rise, and what they're willing to do to get and keep power, many of the decisions being made on the world stage right now stop looking irrational and start looking exactly like what they are. It's all the same abuse. It's only a question of scale.

Fascinating, gripping, deeply validating and eye-opening. One of the most compelling portrayals I've seen of how malignant narcissists and sociopaths operate.

My jaw was on the floor. One scene puts everything into perspective and shows exactly what narcissistic abuse is and why it is so dangerous.

Global Reach

Filmed across eight countries, the film treats manipulation and coercive control as universal, not confined to one culture, one relationship type, or one country's headlines. The same patterns repeat in relationships, institutions, and leadership, everywhere.

More revelatory than expert commentary alone. The film allows its own structure to fracture, transforming a familiar inquiry into present-tense reality.
